The strain of COVID-19 on Hospice Care
Comfort, touch, togetherness: these are among the key elements of hospice care; the kind of care offered at the end of one’s life. Yet these principles are in direct contrast to the distance and separation asked of us during the COVID -19 pandemic.
Overstrand Hospice provides care and support to patients and their families diagnosed with a life-threatening illness (end-stage care), and as such remains an essential aspect of medical care.
The hospice care tradition is to provide holistic care to patients, focusing care on pain management, comfort and peace at the end of life. Hospice is meant to address not only physical care, but also the substantial emotional, social and spiritual needs that may arise through the illness process.
With the aggressive spread of COVID-19 across our communities, our care team have had to reduce visitations and increase protective measures for all direct patient contacts; wearing masks, aprons and gloves are mandatory. The necessary protective equipment can create a barrier to the closeness and intimacy most patients need and find re-assuring through the progression of a serious illness.
After a week of clearing out old stock, through cleaning the facility and restocking shelves, the shop finally opened for the sale of winter clothing on Monday 25th May. Shopping was very different with half of the shop cordoned off and the customers having to go through all the safety protocols before entering. During the reduced hours of business, it was heartening to welcome back our customers after more than a month.
The onset of CORONA Virus has heightened our awareness of the plight of people diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, and the numerous challenges patients and their families are having to deal with on a daily basis. These may include loss of income, loss of future and loved ones, fear of dying alone, in isolation, or fear of dying unsupported and in pain.
Overstrand Hospice’s No end to Caring during Lockdown!
The safety and protection of our patients and families is of paramount importance to us. We remain committed to maintaining a high standard of care, while prioritising those of you who are experiencing severe or uncontrolled pain and other symptoms.
All new referrals will be attended to telephonically and support measures put in place to attend to our new patients’ needs.
We take into consideration that our patients are immuno-compromised, therefore will limit our visits to homes unless requested by you or a family member, or if a change in your condition requires further treatment or interventions.

Approximately 50% of patients are referred to Overstrand Hospice by state hospitals and clinics. Most of these patients (and their families) are from the under-resourced areas across our communities and struggle to make ends meet, or attend to basic needs such as food and shelter.
